When Amazon released its proprietary Kindle eBook reader, it transformed the publishing industry. Then the company delivered a version of its eBook reader for the iPhone. Now Android users can get a slice of the eBook action with the new Kindle app. It allows you to access and read your purchased (or free) Kindle eBooks on your Android device, and it automatically bookmarks a page when you finish reading.

To use the app you must first log into your Amazon account. If you don't already have one,you need to leave the app and create one in aWeb browser. This is unfortunate and an indicator of poor design when the user must exit an app to take advantage of its core functionality.

But wait, you're not ready to return to the app just yet. First of all, you need to configure your I -Click settings, before you can browse through Amazon's catalogue and select any eBooks that take your fancy - with your Web browser, not with the Kindle for Android app.

You can create bookmarks as you go, and jump to a specific location within the text. Unfortunately, these locations don't correspond to the printed version's page numbers; they are local and specific to your Android device. And although the menu has an entry for Go To My Notes & Marks, the app gives you no way to make notes, and no method to sync your Android bookmarks between devices. You can't search the text using the app, either. That last omission is a pity, because a search function would have been convenient if, for example, your English class was covering Great Expectations or one of the other ex pi red-copyright classics available for free on Amazon.

Verdict

In its current iteration, Amazon Kindle for Android provides a way to access and read your Kindle eBooks, but it lacks key features and is awkward to set up.B
