This is similar to the excellent iMockups, but a lot cheaper. However, this is entirely focussed on designing iPhone and iPod Touch apps. A wood-effect background coupled with an intuitive interface makes this an interesting app for 59p.

This is one of those apps that enables you to, without any real artistic ability, turn a photo on your iPad into a painting. It's a very easy process - select a photo {which the app turns into a sketch), select a medium (oils, watercolour and so on) and then paint over the photo.


Buamai

C64 Paint XL

C64 Paint is a fun app enabling you to create pixel art in 16 colours - just like that of the Commodore 64. There are five different brush sizes and you can paint pixel by pixel. Both square and non-square pixels add to the authenticity.
It works like a paint program from the '80s, essentially.

You might (and we stress the word 'might1) find a use for this app in your day-to-day creative workflow. Really, all it is are colour sliders with Hue, Saturation and Brightness and RGB values. Still, it could prove useful for colour matching in the field and then finding the RGB value.

Colors magazine comes to life or iPad. It's free but you have to pay to download full issues. Still, for £1.19 you can get hold of Tibor Kalman's first issue, which you won't get for that price anywhere else.

Corklt presents what can only be described as a virtual cork board, enabling you to 'virtually' pin up notes,
photos and docs. Pretty useful for putting together all elements of a project in one place, perhaps, but still a bit of a novelty.


Creative Juice

Creative Juice is all about relieving creative block. All it does is provide you with certain questions to get your brain stimulated (such as 'Imagine that you're watching yourself from above'). And that's it. If it was free then it could be a light-hearted way to strike up an inner conversation. But for 59p, you may as well go for a walk and get a snack.

Forget the siliy name - Crop Suey is actually pretty useful. It provides a simple yet intuitive way to crop, straighten, flip and rotate your photos, using a grid as reference. Nothing flash, but easy to use and does what it says it does.

Although it's a paid-for app, Echofon Pro proves its worth on iPad, being a very slick, clean and easy-to-use Twitter client.
Multiple account support, along with easy access to mentions, direct messages and lists make it one of the most user-friendly twitter clients out there.

say it also acts as an extension of your brain, and they're not far wrong. A great app that can put an end to wondering where you saw that great image.

The Font Game

Although not a native iPad app, we just couldn't resist leaving this one out. Hours of fun await as you challenge yourself and your colleagues to name the font.
One to show off your supreme knowledge of fonts. Great value at 59p -it's a lot of fun.

It's nothing to do with the Mac app of the same name, and it won't let you install fonts on your iPad to use in other apps. However, Font 8ook for iPad does provide you with a very nice way of previewing
font families, which you can add to iPad via iTunes file sharing.

If you're after a solid vector drawing app on iPad then Freeform could possibly be the answer. Quickly create sketches, diagrams or other vector-based drawings with Oval, Rectangle, Line, Polygon and Star tools. There's also gradient fills, Pathfinder tools and much more. A nice vector drawing solution.

FTPOnTheGo Pro

you can create wallpapers with artwork from the likes of Rex Crowle and Pete Fowler by
purchasing 'artist packs' in-app.

Graffiti NY is a great collection of images showing some of New York's best graffiti art. Whilst we'd like it to be free (it supports the Mark Batty book of the same name) it's a photo book of real interest.

Another sketching app, this time at a very reasonable price. Harmonious attaches some nice textures to brushes and tools, and novel features like an organic undo - which leaves a mark on the sketchbook

HelTweetica

As you can probably guess from the title,  HelTweetica is a Twiner client set in Helvetica. Clean and crisp, the interface enables you to quickly follow tweets, messages and mentions. Of course, with Twitter clients it's down to personal preference, but this one is particularly nice looking.

"Death to Marker Felt" is the cry from the designers and developers behind HelvetiNote. A vector drawing app, iDraw for iPad is actually a pretty decent tool. You can also export to vector-based PDF for editing in Illustrator on your desktop or laptop.

Layers is another fantastic digital painting app for iPad, with a very clean, intuitive interface. Excellent brush controls (although there's only 15 brushes), support for brush transparency, up to five layers and the ability to export as a layered PSD make it an OK painting app - although not quite up to the standard of SketchBook Pro and Brushes.

LiveSketch HD

LiveSketch HD aims to make drawing on your iPad as close to drawing on paper as possible. Draw faster to make a thin line, slower to make a thick line. It's just a sketchpad (although version 1.1 did bring colours, email sharing and undos) but it's intuitive and inexpensive.

Masque is all about painting effects onto your photos (Masque = mask, see!). First choose a photo from

nevertheless, it's still brilliant.
 

Markup for iPad

ZAGG, the developer of this app, makes iPhone and iPad protection skins and this app enables you to create custom skins for your device. It's actually a bit more than that though - being a decent enough image-editor with filters, the ability to crop and rotate and other basic actions. Not bad for free, basically.
