BLACKBERRY OS 4.0 vs OS 5.0

BLACKBERRY OS 4.0 vs OS 5.0

With the introduction of the new Blackberry 9700 Bold and Storm2, we also saw the launch of a new OS for RIM, one that will filter out across the higher end devices. These will include:

  1. BlackberryPearl 8200 series
  2. BlackberryCurve 8330
  3. BlackberryCurve 83501
  4. BlackberryCurve 8900
  5. BlackberryBold 9000
  6. BlackberryStorm 9500
  7. BlackberryTour 9630

The updated OS will not only fix bugs that may have appeared in OS 4.6 (the latest update of the original 4.0 OS), but will also include a number of new services to make life easier and give you more control over using your device, especially if you're a business user under the command of your IT manager.
Tabbed Browsing will make the Black Berry's  browser act more like a desktop experience. You can toggle through different tabs using the Blackberrykey (the one with the RIM dotted logo on it).

Date/Time will be updated, allowing the time to automatically update to the country's time when you visit a new country. You can opt in to be alerted when the device detects a time change, rather than it happening automatically too.

Security Wipe means you can wipe all data from your Blackberryincluding applications, emails, contacts and preferences if it's stolen. Although this is possible through BES, you will now be able to do this if you use BIS and BPS too.

Mobile Backup will become available for new handsets running on OS 5.0. Like other mobile backup services such as MyPhone on Windows Mobile, all data can be backed up to a website automatically.

Advanced Applications has been updated too, with a new Ul to display the app's icon in the list as well as some limited application options settings.
