BLACKBERRY PDF SUPPORT

From the moment you take your BlackBerry, provided it's not from an older series, out of the box, it's ready, willing and able to handle an array of common file formats, such as Word documents, PowerPoint spreadsheets.

Your device will also support basic PDF handling. But we do mean basic, so you can pretty much forget about advanced formatting and image handling.

This shouldn't pose too much of a problem for those looking to extract text-based data from a PDF, such as an address or phone number, but those who crave maps and such like, a third-party application may be required.

As always, there is a multitude of third-party applications available to add functionality to your BlackBerry and there is plenty of choice for people who need more advanced PDF handling. What's more, the majority of them offer a trial period of the product before you have to stump up any cash, an added bonus that lets you try before you buy.

 DOCHAWK PLATINUM

As well as presenting PDF files in their original form, with embedded fonts and images intact, DocHawk is compatible with more than 55 different types of file formats.

It has several extra features that make working with the files easier.

One example is its zoom feature, which minimises the number of clicks needed to move in and out of a document. Zoom levels from 25% up to 150% are on offer and the BlackBerry doesn't need to connect to the network again to adjust zoom once a page has been retrieved.

DocHawk integrates directly with the BlackBerry email pull-down menu, while PDF bookmarks and hyperlinks are also supported by the application.

The tool is available on a subscription basis, with three-month and one-year options available, during which you will receive any updates to the software and on-going technical support. A year's subscription costs $59.95 and three months costs $19.95.

EOffice

eOffice is based on four tenets: edit, view, access and share. It essentially gives users access to a mobile office while on the move, supporting Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, PDF, CSV, faxes and images, and files can be viewed exactly as they were designed to be seen on a desktop computer.

You can zoom in on PDF files and the document views are highly optimised for your handset, allowing you to browse through files without the annoying lag that often besets PDF file viewing on a mobile device.

A new version of the software is now available, which its makers claim boasts an improved user interface that ensures easy access to the features that matter most. In addition, users can take advantage of unlimited online storage for their documents.

eOffice is one of the?cheaper options for adding advanced PDF support to your BlackBerry device, costing $29.95 from  http://www.dynoplex.com/eoffice

REPLIGO PROFESSIONAL

RepliGo Professional enables users to view email attachments such as PDFs, Microsoft Office, WordPerfect and OpenOffice files, faxes and photos.

Users can zoom in to see details such as embedded fonts, graphics and tables, while support for bookmarks, hyperlinks and document tags within PDF documents gives you quick access to information. It also boasts innovative page re-flowing technology that makes document reading a speedier experience.

The service lets users create online accounts that they can store documents in from their desktops for access later on the BlackBerry.

But RepliGo is not cheap. A one-year subscription (which comes with up to 500MB of free storage) costs $79.95, while a three-month subscription is $24.95. It is available from http://www.cerience.com/products/pro/blackberry
