RiM has noticed the importance of natively supporting Apple Mac, and has recently introduced its Desktop Manager software for the platform.
It means Blackberry is much more attractive to all users, and is just as simple to use as the Desktop Manager on PC too.
The first important thing to note is that Blackberry Desktop Manager for Mac is only compatible with devices running on at least OS 4.2, ruling out much older devices.
You'll also have to ensure that you have OS X 10.5
or higher installed on your Mac, and if you want to sync your music with iTunes, that'll have to be upgraded to version 7.7.1 or later to work.
Once you've ensured your equipment can be used with BlackberryDesktop Manager, simply head to the Blackberrysite to download the software.
Once you've installed the software, you just need to plug your Blackberryin to start using it.
The first time you use BlackberryDesktop Manager, you'll have to set up your device. In the Device Name field, enter the name you'd like to call your device. You can select the sync options you want to apply using the tick boxes next to the device's name and choose where you want to save music if you choose to sync your phone with iTunes.
DELETING DATA FROM YOUR DEVICE
If you want to delete information for any reason, ensure you back up your whole phone to prevent losing vital data.
Connect your device to your computer and launch the Blackberry Desktop Manager software.
On the device menu, select Clear Data.
You will now be given two options - All Data or Selected Data. For the latter option, select the databases you'd like to delete.
To create a backup file for your device data, select the Backup data before clearing check box.
To encrypt the backup file, select the Encrypt backup file check box. Type a password.
Click Clear.
ORGANISER
You can choose to sync all data between your computer and Blackberry device. Options that can be synched include contacts, calendar entries, contacts, tasks, and notes and memos.
Some devices can be synched over the air so you don't have to plug your device into your computer using a USB cable. For this, you won't need to use Blackberry Desktop Manager.
Before you use Blackberry Desktop Manager for Mac, you'il have to turn on sync services on your Mac. To do this, head to the ISync application. Select Preferences in iSync. Select the Enable sync?ing on this computer and you're ready to start using Blackberry Desktop Manager.
To sync your organiser items with your computer and vice versa, select the information tab in the Desktop Software. Here, you can choose which options you'd like to sync using the separate fields such as Calendars, Contacts, Notes and Tasks. When you've decided which data you'd like to sync, click the sync button and the two-way sync will occur.
BACKUP AND RESTORE
Backup and Restore allows you to backup all the data on your Blackberry and Restore it if you lose some information.
To backup data into the default folder on your Mac {/Users/<name>/Documents/BlackBerry Backups), click the Back Up icon at the top of the screen. Click ALL data to save everything, and to back up specific data, click Selected data. Select the check box beside one or more databases. Click Back Up.
You can change the backup location of your data by entering the preferences tab on the Blackberry Destop Manager application. Enter Backup Location, click change and type the new location.
To schedule automatic backups, click on the Device Options, then the Backup tab. Select Automatically backup when device is connected check box. Select an interval from the drop down box and decide what you want to backup, whether it's all device application data or add exceptions such as calendars or contacts which won't be backed up if you choose to tick that box.
To restore data to your device, you'll need mass storage mode turned on.
Please note, when you restore the data on your phone, everything will be wiped from your device before the backup file is restored. Anything you have not backed up will not be restored.
To restore your device after backup, simply click on the restore icon at the top of the screen.
Either select a .bbb backup file and then choose whether you want to restore ail data in the file or select some of it. For example, you may only want to restore contacts, so select that partition.
Click restore to start the process.
APPLICATIONS
You can add, manage and delete all the applications installed on your Blackberry using the Applications tab in Blackberry Desktop Manager.
To add an application, choose the Applications tab at the top of the screen, in the list of available applications, you can select the checkbox beside the specified app to install it onto the device.
To choose a third party application that you've downloaded onto your computer, click the '+' icon and select the .alx file for the app. Click open and then start to begin installing the application onto your device.
To update applications, enter the Applications tab and click on Check for Updates. If there are updates to install, you can opt to backup and restore your data while the updates are installing or backup and restore the third party applications. Click start to begin the updating process.
To delete certain applications, enter the Applications tab and click the check box next to the ones you want to delete. Click start to delete the applications.
MUSIC
You can sync your Blackberry with your iTunes library using the Blackberry Desktop Manager too. Playlists will be transferred, including podcasts and other audio files will be syched too.
If your music includes Digital Rights Managed (DRM) music, these files are not supported.
To sync your Blackberry with your music collection, select the media section and then music. To sync all your music, select All Songs and Playlists. To sync only playlists, click Select Playlists and choose which ones you want. Finally, you can add a random selection of music to fill up any remaining space on your device. These songs will appear in the random playlist on your device once it has synched.
Click sync and your music wili be on your BlackBerry.
