A decent way of staying on top of tho money markets, well, the US ones, at least
By oversight or design, this small, free app is largely aimed at the American financial market.
Free Pocket-sized marketplace from Google
This app from Google (and created by boffins as part of the company's '20 per cent time' philosophy) works as an extension of its online Google Finance service. Even if you don't use that website it still has its uses for those with an interest, and investments, in the US NASDAQ, Dow Jones and S&P 500 markets.
The benefit for financial analysts is immediate and obvious - real time tracking of stock prices wherever you are. As Google itself says, 'the markets don't stop when you leave your desk'.
The homepage features a market summary with three tabs across the top that take you to the Markets, Portfolios and News pages.
Porfolios is where you can add specific companies to keep track of, and changes made here are reflected in your online Google Finance account if you have one. The news tab brings a decent feed taken direct from the finance section of Google News. News specific to a stock is also presented at the bottom of its quote page. Finding individual stocks, via the search function, is made easier by an auto-suggestion engine.
You can have Google Finance running in the background, with a small window appearing on your phone's home screen displaying live info about a chosen index. This is going to have an effect on your battery life, though.
A major flaw is that it currently only provides real-time data on US
The benefit for financial analysts is real-time tracking of stock prices wherever you are
markets. It's a no go if you're looking to track data from the UK, Japan or even Canada. In that regard it doesn't quite fit its purpose, as there will be many people with global portfolios for whom the app is redundant and other apps, such as Pocke tools Stock Alert, offer a wider selection of markets.
The file size is small, only 291 k, and the app costs nothing to install. As such, anyone with a Google Finance account will probably want to download it - just don't expect it to offer the same features.
