I can't make FaceTime calls over a 3G connection - iPhone

FaceTime requires a Wi-Fi connection to work its magic.

Software updates

There's no point complaining about the iPhone crashing and apps being unresponsive if you haven't updated to the latest version of iOS. Apple often fixes known bugs in its software updates without really making a song and dance about what those issues were, so it may solve any issues you're having. Hook up your iPhone to your Mac or PC, open /Tunes and then click on the iPhone in the Devices list in the left-hand panel. Next, hit the Check for Update button. If there's an update available, follow the prompts that appear, to download and install the new software version.

I can't make FaceTime calls over a 3G connection

FaceTime on the iPhone 4 enables you to make video calls easily, but it currently only works with other iPhone 4 users, and only when you're both connected to Wi-Fi. Of course, we expect FaceTime to have wider compatibility with other software once its standards package has been ratified as an open standard, which Apple is currently applying for.

At present, there are two solutions to this problem -the first is to get a MiFi device from the Three mobile network (http://bit.ly/threemifi). These little units slip into your pocket and generate a Wi-Fi access point using the 3G network that moves around with you. We've tested FaceTime using a MiFi and it works, it's just a little bit more jittery than it is over a faster broadband connection, The second solution is to use the Fring app instead of FaceTime, Fring provides iPhone 4 users unrestricted two-way video calling over Wi-Fi or 3G, and best of all, it also works with Android or Symbian phones running Fring. The only fly in the ointment is that Fring is currently not compatible with the Skype network, due to action on Skype's part to prevent it.

iPhone doesn't appear in iTunes

If your iPhone just doesn't appear in iTunes, there are a few things to check. First, is the battery dead and does it need a little bit of juice before it'll kick in? Secondly, is it your USB port? Try connecting to a different USB port on your computer. Finally, the tried-and-tested method -just switch the iPhone off and on and see if it appears. If not, use the technique described on page 93 to restore the iPhone. If iTunes still isn't saying hello, it's time for you to visit an Apple Store and get your iPhone fixed.

Yellow spots on the screen

Some iPhone 4 owners have reported yellow spots appearing on the screen. This happens when the evaporation part of the laminating process used to create the screen hasn't had time to finish. The solution is simply to wait and it should go away.

QUICK TIP

Is the iPhone constantly throwing in words you no longer use? Perhaps the name of your ex? Get rid of the memorised words by going to Settings > General > Reset > Reset Keyboard Dictionary. Now it has to learn all your custom words from scratch.
