LogMeln Ignition - iphone 4

LogMeln Ignition

£17.99/$29.99 Control your computer

LogMeln enables you to control your Macs and PCs from your iPhone or iPad - it's a universal app that runs on both - and the magical bit is that it can do it over the internet. All you have to do is install a free helper utility on your computer and it handles all the complicated stuff, making it easy to connect to them from anywhere in the world.

Once you've got it all set up and have signed in, ifs just like sitting in front of your Mac or PC. You can use the mouse, pop up the on-screen keyboard to type, and even switch the screen resolution on-the-fly, as well as unpinch-to-zoom to make it easier to see what you're doing. You can't copy files to or from the remote computer, or send files from your iPhone to print, but despite the high price, it's terrifically useful.

It is, in fact, a much more reliable way to connect to a Mac in a different location over the internet than Apple's own Back to My Mac service (part of the MobileMe suite of internet tools), which sometimes fails to navigate the morass of dynamically assigned IP addresses, NAT and port forwarding on even the most modest home router setup, LogMeln always seems able to find your remote computers, and will happily adapt its quality - even dropping as low as greyscale - to ensure the screen is reasonably responsive, even on slow upstream connections.
