most popular App for iPhone 4

 SHAPE BUILDER

59p/99C Shape Builder boasts 146 toddler-friendly puzzles. It's simple and fun: when your child puts pieces in the right places, there's a big hurrah and speech therapist Jill Dews reads the word. Puzzles include fruit and veg, letters, numbers, jobs and so on, and you get sound effects with the instrument and animal puzzles.

 ABC ANIMALS

£1.19/$1.99 Flashcard educational apps are common in the App Store, and ABC Animals is a good one. Aimed at pre-school ages, it uses animals to teach the alphabet and basic character printing. Pre-recorded voices pronounce each letter. Double-tap a card to see how to write the letter in upper and lower case.

 BRUSHES

£2.99/$4.99 Brushes is that rare thing - a program that's fun to use whether you're fingerpainting or making fine art. It's the sort of thing that will keep older children engrossed for hours, but even young kids should get a kick out of its fast, finger-based drawing tools or playback of the parents' efforts.

 SHAKESPEARE PRO

£5.99/$9.99 Keep the complete works of Shakespeare in your pocket. The Pro version has useful education-related features, including scene breakdowns and short reworkings of plays for younger learners. A glossary enables you to define words as you read. For students of English at GCSE and beyond, this app is invaluable.

 MATH CARDS

59p/99c Math Cards works the same as old-fashioned flashcards but is far more engaging. Covering addition, subtraction, multiplication and division, the app grades kids as they progress, using a colourful interface to hold their interest. Simple controls keep the focus on the tests, and more detailed feedback is available, too.

 ALL THE COUNTRIES PRO

£2.99/$4.99 It's easy enough to ace a basic geography quiz, but do you or your kids know what the flag of The Gambia looks like? This is more than just an app about geography - it's a giant resource with every conceivable fact you'd ever want to know about a nation.

 FACEBOOK

FREE The official Facebookapp was slow to be upgraded for the iPhone 4, but it's a cracking app for anyone who uses the social networking site. Remember, though, that the site's web app is pretty slick too.

 FOURSQUARE

FREE Like Gowalla, Foursquare enables you check in at locations and share your movements with friends. It has more momentum than its rival, and the gaming model's fun, but the app's not that pleasant to use.

 FLICKR

FREE If you use the brilliant photo sharing site Flickr, this is a no-brainer. You can upload, tag and set photo permissions. Even if you don't use the site, the app's a great way to browse shots, even showing those nearby.

 PENNIES

£1.79/$2.99 Pennies is designed to help you keep track of how much you've spent in a given month. Set a budget, then every time you spend, fire up Pennies, add an expense and pick the category for it.

 SHAZAM

FREE What's the name of that song you can hear, and who's it by? Now you need never ask that question again.
Fire up Shazam, let it listen to the music for a few seconds and then it'll tell you what's on.

iSTAT

59p/99C This shows you how the resources on your Macs are being used. It's Mac-only at the moment, but that may change. Presentation is beautiful, with elegant colour schemes and clear, concise details.
