N.O.V.A. for iphone

NOVA

£2.99/$4.99 A shooter to die for

We've had a few decent first/third-person shooters on the iPhone now, but Gameloft's sci-fi effort is possibly the best yet. The story typically features a lone space marine fending off a bunch of aliens, but the superb gameplay papers over the narrative cracks.

Its multiple internal and external environments are reminiscent of Halo, and the whole thing is engineered with panache.
The latest version adds higher frame rates, increased draw distances, beefier effects and smoother scrolling, which is all very welcome.
What's really special, though, is Gameloft's implementation of the iPhone 4 gyroscope as a controller aid for a complete three-dimensional range of view, enabling a more accurate aim and fuller immersion in the alien terrain,

The scenery is gorgeous - especially on the iPhone 4's Retina display - and there's a solid arsenal of weapons at your disposal for pasting baddies. The aliens that slither across the landscape are both intimidating and formidable. What really makes this shooter stand out, however, is its full-fledged multiplayer mode, offering two- to four-player battling over both local networks and online. Taken together, these features put N.O.V.A. up there with the finest first-person shooters currently available on the iPhone 4, We just can't wait for the next update!
