Google Sky Map

Free  Get to grips with the galaxy

Have you ever gazed up at the night sky and wondered what all those twinking constellations were called? Probably not if you live in a city, as the only glowing lights are from passing Easyjet carriers. However, if you're plann ng a romantic trip out of the big smoke anytime soon, Google Sky Map is an essential download.

The app loads quickly and presents you with a detailed mappingof surrounding stars. Simply point your phone towards a 4 visible ' constellation and r your screen will show you its name,  as well as any planets and major stars in the vicinity. If the display gets crowded you can quickly and simply remove a laye' of detail through the menu.

Extremely worthwhile app that manages to be genuinely informative as well as fun to use.

Extras include a gallery of stunning photos taken through the Hubble Telescope, an impressive time travel mode that shows you the sky arrangement on a particular night, and a night time mode that turns the display red. This was supposed to make everything clearer, but we preferred the standard mode.

We were highly impressed by Google Sky Map, which proves educational as well as entertaining. There's no denying it's a gimmick, but if it helps to spark romance on a night under :he stars, then it's one we heartily endorse.
