Arcus Dictionary Pro

£1.22/$1.97 More than words

As dictionaries go, this is an easy to navigate, concise option.lt loads quickly and offers a search bar to look up your desired word or phrase, before displaying the definition of any searched-for item, synonyms, an opportunity to see the word used in a sentence, and even an option to 'favourite' the definitions you really like (we favourite'd homunculus - look it up).

The dictionary declines to offer spelling corrections - which would have been a useful feature - although it does, handily, allow for any words that can't be looked up online.

A good virtual dictionary to have in your pocket, but it might be an idea to try the free version first.

One irritation with Arcus Dictionary Pro is that to open it, we were given the ultimatum to either install 'Speech synthesis data installer' or not use it at all. Not only did we feel bullied into downloading this add-on, we weren't told what it was. Turns out that it's a text-to-voice; a nice supplemental.

Dur advice is start with the free version of Arcus, the only difference to paid being that it's supported by ads. These are hardly anywhere to be seen, though. Given that this isn't an app you'll use everyday, the free version will most likely prove to be sufficient.

If you do like the idea of keeping a virtual dictionary locked and loaded, we rate this as a compelling choice.
