Tucked away in the Applications folder of most recent BlackBerry smartphones are three built-in applications for handling Microsoft Office files.

Word To Go, Sheet To Go and Slideshow To Go form part of the standard Documents To Go suite from DataViz, which lets you view and edit Microsoft Office files on your handset.

Don't expect the full Office experience and don't be surprised if the formatting of more complex documents or Power Point presentations goes wrong during viewing. After all, you are trying to view a document intended for desktop display on a device with a screen less than a quarter of the size of that of a desktop or laptop PC.

But there is still a lot you can do with Documents To Go, although the BlackBerry manual and help files don't tell you much about the applications or what they can do. You can also upgrade to the premium version, which lets you do much more.

 WORD TO GO

•  The standard version will open, view, edit and create Word 97-2003 for Windows and Word 98-2004 for Macintosh documents. The premium version adds support for 2007 and 2008 .docx files.
• View and edit modes.
•  Read-only file support.
• Integration with BlackBerry email application for opening attachments.
• Text-editing features, including cut/copy/ paste (rich text within a document), spellchecking and character formatting.
• View/edit font types, sizes, colour and styling.
• Paragraph formatting.
• View tracked changes.
  
  Support for JPG, PNG, BMP, DIB, WMF and EMF graphics formats.

  SLIDESHOW TO GO 

•  The standard version can open, view, edit and create PowerPoint 97-2003 for Windows and PowerPoint 98-2004 for Macintosh files. The premium version adds support for 2007 and 2008 Office Open XML (OOXML) PowerPoint files.
• Slide, Outline and Notes views.
• Integration with BlackBerry email application for opening attachments.
• Titles, placeholders and textbox support.
• Text rendering with six TrueType fonts.
•  Standard and custom AutoShapes.
• JPG, PNG, BMP, DIB, WMF and EMF graphics support. 

SHEET TO GO

• The standard version will open, view, edit and create Excel 97-2003 for Windows and Excel 98-2004 for Macintosh spreadsheets. The premium version also handles 2007 and 2008 Office Open XML (OOXML) files.
• Integrates with the BlackBerry email application for opening attachments.
•  Support for Documents To Go IT Policy group in BlackBerry Enterprise Server 4.1.5, so IT administrators can manage how documents are handled in the same way they can with Microsoft Office on the desktop.
• View/edit and clear cell values.
• Cut, copy, paste (plain text and functions).
• View/apply number formatting (general, number, currency, accounting, date, time, percentage, fraction, scientific, text, special, custom).
• View/insert/edit comments.
