iphone 4 - Edit video on the move.

iMovie for iPhone makes it easy to edit and export HD movies on the move

Using your iPhone 4 and Apple's iMovie app, it's incredible to think you can shoot, edit and export 720p high-definition movies that are playable on your home theatre setup. However, iMovie doesn't come with the iPhone 4 - the app costs £2.99 and can be downloaded from the App Store, either on your phone or in iTunes, and then synced in the normal way.

The app is like a pared down version of its desktop counterpart, enabling you to take video footage and edit it together. Clips that you've imported to the app appear on a Timeline, and can be trimmed, just by using your finger. Moving along the Timeline is equally easy -simply drag your finger back and forth (this is called scrubbing). Doing so previews your project on the iPhone's vibrant display. The app is incredibly easy to use and.

with a bit of practice, editing your footage on the go becomes as easy as shooting it in the first place.

You can also add titles and credits to your clips with a simple double-tap, as well as transitions that make one clip fade into the next. In addition, you can add still photos and an audio track - either by using one of the built-in themes or your favourite DRM-free track from your music library. On the subject of themes, iMovie has plenty, ranging from fun to more serious, news or travel-inspired offerings. They're easy to apply and look great on the big screen.

iMovie is an impressive app, and one you can have a lot of fun with, Imagine, for instance, editing together family videos while you're still at the party! Or, by the time you get home from the sports event, you can have the highlights edited and uploaded to YouTube.

Whatever your choice of subject, once you've exported the footage -in a choice of standard definition or 720p HD - it goes into your Photos app. From there, you can transfer it to your Mac or PC, or upload it to YouTube. If you have iMovie for Mac, you can import your finished video into this and watch it on your computer, or stream or import to your Apple TV or media centre. This app opens up a whole world of possibilities for creating slick, high-quality movies in no time at all.

So download the iMovie app and follow our guide to create your very own movie masterpiece.

HOW TO / Shoot edit and share your video

 1- Shoot some video

To use iMovie, you'll need footage. Open Camera switch to camcorder mode and shoot. Mix up your shots, using different angles and lighting for more interesting results. Then open iMovie and tap the + in the top-right corner to start a new project.

 2 - Pick your theme

Next, choose a theme. Scroll to the right and tap one that suits your footage. We've chosen the playful one because it goes nicely with the child having fun. At this point, you can also opt to use the theme's music as a soundtrack, but it's best to add your own later.

 3 - Import your footage

On the next screen, tap the downward arrow in a box to add media to your project. Record directly into the app by pressing the camera button, Once you tap Insert Footage, you'll see a visual list of your clips - showing a preview of each. Touch one to import it.

 4 - Add further clips

Import all your clips this way. They're imported in the order you tap them, from left to right on the Timeline. Once your clips are in, tap and scroll on the Timeline to inspect your footage, The red line shows where you are -you'll see a preview above the Timeline.

 5 -Preview your project

Touch Play in the top-right to see your footage with all your clips strung together. Tap anywhere to pause. Next, it's time to edit your footage, You'll almost certainly want to cut down some clips, Tap a clip and a border will appear with a yellow dot at the end.

QUICK TIP
You can change the theme linked to your iMovie project at any time while you're working on it. Tap the Settings button at the beginning of your Timeline and choose your new theme. Any titles and transitions that you've added already will be updated to match the theme you've chosen.

   6 -Edit individual clips
Drag the yellow dot on one of your clips to the left. This shortens the clip. You can do the same from the front. To remove footage from the middle, use the yellow dots to mark the section at the start, import the clip again and mark the section at the end.

 7 -Transitions
Add clips anywhere in your footage by placing the red line at the desired point and tapping Insert Footage. Between clips is a button indicating there's a transition from one to the next. Double tap, choose Theme, Cross Dissolve or None, pick a duration and hit Done.

 8 -Finalise and export

Double-tap the first clip. Press Title Style, then Opening. Tap Title Text Here to add words. Do the same with your last clip if you like, choosing Ending. Once you're happy, tap Projects, then Share and pick a resolution to export to. It'll appear in the Photos app.
