IPhone 4 - Use the iBooks app

The new iBooks app enables you to read ebooks and more on the move.

The Boots app, which enables you to read ebooks on the go, was introduced on the iPad, but it was only a matter of time before it came to the iPhone as well. And with the iPhone 4's needle-sharp 960x640 Retina display, text is crisp enough to read even the longest of books.

First of all, you need to go to the App Store and download the free app. Once you've got it, open it up, You'll notice you already have one ebook in your Library - a copy of Winnie The Pooh - a gift from Apple. Tap the cover to open the ebook up and try flicking from right to left to turn the pages. This gives you a feel of how the app works.

Along the top of the screen, you can opt to go back to your Library, skip to the contents of the book or adjust the brightness of the screen, You can also change the fonts and font sizes. When you tap on the double-A icon, a pop-up box appears, enabling you to choose between two text sizes and different fonts. You can also turn Sepia on here, which mimics the look of an aged book, The magnifying glass at the top of the screen enables you to search the book, while the final button adds

a bookmark so that you can find your place again quickly. Running along the bottom of the book is the Navigator, enabling you to find a specific page quickly.

You can also highlight things, add notes to a piece of text or look up a word in the built-in dictionary. To access these options, tap and hold the text you wish to select. A menu appears, at which point you can reselect text if necessary and choose from one of the options.

Back in your Library, you can delete or rearrange your books by touching the Edit button, view as a list or shelf view by using the two icons in the top-right, or search for book titles. You'll also find the iBooks Store, where you can add to your Library - discover how below.

QUICK TIP

It's easy to open PDFs in iBooks. From an email attachment, tap the PDF attachment and then Open in iBooks. From Safari tap the link to the PDF and then hit Open in iBooks You can also sync PDFs by adding them to iTunes on your Mac or PC and syncing.

HOW TO / Find and buy new books

 From your iBooks Library, tap the Store button. The Library will rotate to reveal the iBooks Store. Like the App Store, there are various options for browsing and downloading books, The first page you see when you load the store will be the New and Notable books.

 Tap the Charts button to see the top Kn paid-for books. By scrolling down you can also view the top free tomes. Tap the title you want to buy or download, hit the price button and then Buy, The book you've bought will now appear in your iBooks Library.

Tapping the Browse button in the store enables you to browse by author, and there's a comprehensive search feature accessed by touching the appropriate button, Finally, you can check what books you've bought in the past by tapping Purchases.
