IPhone 4 - Handy utilities

Get more from other built-in apps.

We've already shown you how to use all the main built-in apps on your iPhone, but there are a few smaller ones that are definitely worth a look, too. We're talking about the Notes, Weather, Clock, Calculator, Stocks and youTube apps. These may be minor, but they all play their part in making the iPhone experience what it is. As you'll discover here, they also have more useful features than you might have realised.

So, if you'd like your iPhone to wake you up in the morning, want to find out what the weather is like on the other side of the planet, or just want to kill time by watching videos, you'll find everything you need to know here. These small apps are all free and included on your iPhone by default, so there's nothing else to do but get cracking!

HOW TO / Get more from Notes

Notes is an essential part of the iPhone: you can use the app to type up whatever you like using the on-screen keyboard. There's no need to hit a save button either; everything you type is saved automatically.

Tap the Notes button to access previously written notes, They're all stored in order of the date they were added. Alternatively, you can use the forward or backward arrows at the bottom to skip around.

HOW TO / Use world clocks

The time is always displayed at the top of the Home screen. But there's also a Clock app that's worth a look because of its useful functions, such as an alarm, a stopwatch and a timer.

To add a new alarm, tap the + icon. Choose a time for your alarm from the scrolling barrel and then a duration in the Repeat section. If you set Snooze to On, you can tap Snooze for another 10 minutes in bed.

HOW TO / Check forecasts

Weather is a handy six-day forecasting app that gives local weather predictions on a city basis using graphical depictions. When it's daytime, the weather board is blue, and it turns dark purple at night. All you need to do is find the closest city to your location. You need to tap the i button, then the + button to add a new city to your Weather app. Type the town, city or postcode into the Search bar, and select your city. It will now be added to your cities list. On this screen, you can also change between Celsius and Fahrenheit temperatures.

HOW TO / Get more information

In both the Weather and the Stocks applications on your iPhone, you'll notice a round, purple Yahoo icon in the bottom-left corner of the screen. This icon is actually a button that takes you to the Yahoo website, offering you more information about what you're currently looking at. For example, if you tap this button while looking at the six-day forecast for a city in Weather, you're then taken to a Yahoo web page about it in Safari.

HOW TO/Use Calculator

Calculator is one of those applications that leads a double life. On the surface, it looks like a simple calculator, with all the regular buttons you'd expect, but turn the iPhone into landscape mode and it morphs into a complex scientific calculator, capable of handling equations and formulae. In either mode, the MC button will clear the calculator's memory, M+ will add the displayed number to the number in the memory, while M- will subtract it. The MR button will replace whatever is displayed with the contents of the memory.

QUICK TIP
When looking for companies in Stocks remember that a .L after the stock ID will indicate the London Stock Exchange. Other country codes, such as .HA or .AS will indicate the stock exchanges of different countries.

HOW TO / Check your stocks and shares

Stocks checks share prices on the iPhone. As is usual for free stock-checking services, the figures are delayed by 20 minutes. Open the app and you'll see some stock, such as Apple (AAPL), has already been added.

The handy graph at the bottom of the screen in the Stocks application shows performance over a day, a week, a month, three months, six months, one year or two years. Just tap the relevant button.

Adding a new company is easy. Tap the i button, then the + button. Type in the stock ID or the name of your company and tap the Search button. Your iPhone will then find the company for you.

HOW TO / Play YouTube videos

In YouTube, tap Featured, Most Viewed, Bookmarks or Search to find videos. Once you've located one to watch, tap it to play, The progress bar shows you how much has downloaded and the video will start playing when enough is ready.

When a video starts to play, the controls will disappear so that they don't obscure the screen; get them back by tapping anywhere. If you like the clip, touch the bookmark icon. Tap the envelope icon to send the video's URL to a friend.

Drag the playhead along the progress bar and you can jump through the video. Touch and hold the forward and backward buttons to fast-forward or rewind a clip, A single tap will take you to the next or previous video on YouTube.

You can customise the YouTube screen to suit your usage. Tap More > Edit. You can now drag buttons such as Top Rated or History down to the dock at the bottom of the screen, This is useful if you use these features regularly.
