Unleash your inner Terminator with this augmented reality graphical interface.
Free Augmented reality bites
Layar landed on the Android Market with oodles of hype surrounding it.This is because it was seen as one of the first applications to take what's called augmented reality and find a use for it in real-life situations.
Now augmented reality is a bit of an oddity. Essentially it is a graphical interface that is shown to interact with the real world. This is done by pointing your phone at something and an augmented reality program will layer the graphics on top, a bit like when you see Arnie's point of view in The Terminator.
Layar takes this technology to a whole new level, effective.y layering information you would get from a search engine and putting it into the world around you.
So, if you are desperately searching for a coffee shop in particular location, fire Layar up (it only takes up 1.8MB of space), go to
the restaurants section and point your phone at the road you are standing on. Within seconds, a digital map overlay will appear on your handset's screen, showing you the quickest route to the nearest establishment where you can get yourself a cappuccino.
Once you have located the coffee shop, you can then point your phone at i:s front and then watch in astonishment as a wealth of information appears before you.
In the main, it'll be fairly mundane stuff like phone numbers and menus, but there may be more useful stuff .ike user-reviews.
Layar makes use of your phone's camera to display real-time digital info on to wherever you may be and, though it's appeal may at times be limited, it works.
Although Layar is just a web browser, the way it displays info in the world around you is brilliant.
