For some Skype is nothing more than a novelty, but for others, it's a way of avoiding pricey voice and data charges.
Users will love the fact that Skype doesn't just work on Wi-Fi; voice-over-internet calls can be placed just as well over a data connection to the internet. However, despite call quality over data being good (although slightly stuttered) using Skype that way defeats the object unless you're making long distance calls.
The growth of wireless broadband networks has caused a surge in Skype users, though the service is most frequently used as an add-on. Calling other 'Skyped' friends is fine, but why bother paying Skype even miniscule amounts to make calls to landlines and mobiles if you've got minutes left on your monthly voice plan? It's best used as a selective solution to an expensive, and common problem - international calls - though if you spend a lot of your time in places where Wi-Fi is free and plentiful, we'd recommend Skype wholeheartedly purely because the sound quality is stunning. Barring any network problems (a minimum 1 MB connection is needed, though Skype helpfully lets you know in-call if
that's likely to be a problem), Skype calls are clearer than any landline or mobile phone.

Given the explosion and continued obsession with text messages/SMS, Skype's instant messaging is just as appealing as its voice-over-internet offering. Various syncing options are possible, including with all of your contacts - a nice time-saver if you only have a data plan.
Slightly dated and at the mercy of cheap bundled voice packages, this polished app is nevertheless essential for those that have friends, family or customers across the globe - or those that have a penchant for hi-def calling.
