Making phone calls

It's easy to overlook, but yes, the iPhone 4 is a telephone as well.

Not only has the iPhone put the smart in 'smartphone', it's pretty good at the phone part too. Touch the Phone icon and you can dial from your contacts - which can be synced with Address Book on your Mac or with Windows software such as Outlook - your own favourites, or using an on-screen keypad. When you find a phone number on a web page, in an email, or in an app, you'll notice it's underlined as a hyperlink. Touching it will pop up a box asking if you want to dial it.

As you'd expect, phone calls take priority over other tasks, so an incoming call will interrupt what you're doing. Thanks to iOS 4's multitasking, you can go straight back once you've taken the call. If you don't want to talk, tap Dismiss to send the call to your voicemail.

Picking up your voicemail is easier than ever, too. The Phone icon shows a number badge when there are missed calls or voice messages awaiting your attention. In the Phone app, touch Voicemail to access Visual Voicemail, a feature that lists your messages and enables you to play them without

phoning a number and picking options. Visual Voicemail requires an iPhone-specific contract, so may not be available on pay-as-you-go.

In Settings > Phone, you can turn on Call Forwarding to send your calls to a different number. Call Waiting notifies you of incoming calls when you're engaged, if your network supports it. You can also set a SIM PIN, which you'll need to enter when you switch your iPhone on to make calls or browse the web over your data network. Set this to On, type 0000, then tap Change PIN to set your own.

Control your ringtone, vibrate setting and voicemail alerts in Settings > Sounds. Silence your iPhone with the switch on the left.
If you copy a phone number from another app, you can tap and hold the space above the phone keypad and select Paste to enter it. Tap Backspace to remove digits off the end, but you can't tap and hold to edit the number. Touch Call to dial.
HOW TO / Make calls on the iPhone 4
01 To enter a phone number, touch Keypad, then tap in the digits. If the number is recognised from your existing contacts, the person or company's name is displayed too. Touch Call to dial. Press + next to Call to add the number to your contacts.

02 Alternatively, touch Contacts. Start typing a name into the search box at the top to narrow down the list. If the search box isn't visible, tap the bar the very top of the screen. Enter the name you want, then select one of the numbers in their entry to dial it.

03 Touch Favorites for a shortlist of regularly used numbers. Tap a name to dial. Add people using the + button, or tap Add to Favorites while viewing a contact. Press Edit to remove people or reorder them with the handles that appear on the right.

04  You can also dial using Voice Control (see page 51). Hold the Home button or the clicker in your Apple headphone wire to activate it, then say "Call" or "Dial" followed by the contact's name and which number you want, such as "Call Fred Bloggs home".

05 While a call's in progress, use the buttons to mute the microphone (you can hear them, but the caller can't hear you); display the keypad to enter touch-tone codes; listen to the call on speaker; or switch to FaceTime for video chat (see page 30).

06 Touch Contacts if you need to browse your numbers during a call, for example to find information for the person you're speaking to. You can also tap or double-tap the Home button during a call and use other apps, but audio functions will be disabled.

07 Touch Add call to ring up to five people simultaneously. When they pick up, you can swap between calls or merge them for a conference call. Tap the arrow in the top right to list participants; touch Private to speak to one while others hold.

08 The Recents icon shows a badge whenever you miss an incoming call, The number indicates how many missed calls you haven't yet viewed. Touch Recents, then All to view all incoming and outgoing calls, or Missed to see only the ones you didn't pick up.

09 When callers leave you messages, the Voicemail icon shows a number. Touch the button to list messages, if your network supports Visual Voicemail, Select a message and tap Play to hear it. Touch Greeting, then Custom to record your outgoing message.
