Master the Home screen

New to the iPhone?
The Home screen is where the adventure begins

Once you've set up you iPhone up via iTunes, it's time to explore the Home screen. This is where you can access all the functions of your shiny new companion.

The most central new feature of the iPhone 4's iOS 4 operating system is multitasking. Instead of having to close an app when you want to do something different and go back to the Home screen, you can now double-dick the Home button to bring up a scrolling list of recently used apps at the foot of the screen, and switch to one immediately by touching its icon. Even if you do have to go back to the Home screen to find what you need next, the app you've left behind - assuming it's iOS 4-savvy -will continue to perform tasks, such as playing music, while you get on with something else.

Another new feature is the folder system that enables you to group app icons together, With so many apps available now, keeping them organised in some way is essential,

Don't be shy about fiddling around with your icons either. One of the great things about Apple's

"The Home screen is where you access all the functions of your shiny new companion from"

iOS is that it's almost impossible to mess things up just by mucking about. So if you've rearranged your Home screens to the point where you can't remember where anything is, don't despair. Simply find and open the Settings app, scroll down and tap Reset. Then go to Reset Home Screen Layout. When you click the Home button, all your icons are arranged like new,

Incidentally, if you upgraded to the iPhone 4 from an earlier model and restored your backup, this will be the first time you see the new default Home screen layout. If you're wondering where your Clock, Calculator, Compass and Voice Memos apps have gone, they're just a tap away in the Utilities folder.

QUICK TIP
Make your Home screen icons wiggle (see below) and purchased apps show a cross. Tap it to delete the app. If you've synced since buying the app, it'll still appear in iTunes. If not, go back to the App Store and repurchase it for free.

HOW TO CUSTOMISE YOUR HOME SCREEN

Touch and hold any of the app icons on your Home screens to make them all wiggle (yes, that's the official terminology). You can then rearrange things by dragging any icon around, Move it to the edge of the screen to nudge it onto the next.

To organise related apps into a folder, drag one app's icon onto another. Drop it when the large white outline appears, iOS will suggest a name for your folder based on the apps' genre. Touch the grey cross if you'd prefer to type your own instead.

The folder appears as a single Home screen icon. Touch it to open, then tap an app to launch it, or touch outside the folder to close it again, To drag apps back out of a folder, open the folder, touch and hold to wiggle the icons and drag your app away.

HOW TO / FIND YOUR WAY AROUND THE HOME SCREEN

Signal strength

The bars to the left of your network name indicate your mobile signal strength. When you're connected to a Wi-Fi network, its signal strength is shown to the right. When you're not on Wi-Fi, the symbol changes to a circle for basic GPRS data reception, E for the quicker EDGE, or 3G for the fastest link, where that's available.

   Auto-lock
When you leave your iPhone for a few moments, it'll goto sleep. Press the Home button or the Sleep/ Wake button (at the top right) to wake it up, and you'll see this Lock screen. Slide the Unlock Slider and you're back at the Home screen.

Extra controls
If you flick all the way to the right while viewing recently used apps, you'll find some special icons. These enable you to control any audio currently playing, launch the iPod, or prevent the screen rotating out of portrait orientation (this won't affect any tasks that only work in landscape).

Recently used apps Pressing the Home button twice reveals recent apps. Flick left or right to see more, then tap an icon to return to that app. In most cases, this takes you to the point at which you left it. To remove an app from the list, touch and hold an icon to make them wiggle, then tap the - symbol.

Multiple screens As you add apps, they'll occupy multiple Home screens. The dots show how many. Flick left or right to move between them. Flick right on the first Home screen to reveal the iPhone's Search screen. •

Number badges
Some apps may show numbers on their icons. The figures indicate items waiting for your attention, such as unread messages in Mail or app updates. When apps are in folders, the folder's badge shows the total alerts for the apps you've placed inside it.

Battery

The battery icon is plain when not connected to the mains or your computer, shows a lightning bolt when charging, and displays a plug when connected and charged. The percentage charge is displayed if this option is turned on in Settings > General > Usage > Battery Percentage.
