Get set for a whole new way to typo onto your phone

Perfect for the fat fingered, this app's predictive text accuracy may spell the end for tapping out messages.

Free Predictive text taken to the next level

Swype is the worst-kept secret of the app world. While still in closed beta - which has opened up from time to time - it has been available for Android since April 2010.

Swype isn't actually available on the Android Market, however: it is a third-party app that has to be downloaded from the company's website. While it is rare for a decent third-party app to be worth this hassle, it definitely is for Swype. The website you need to go to is: https://beta.swype.com.

Swype may well be the best way to 'type' on an Android phone. The inverted commas around 'type' are there for a reason, as to type out words you glide your finger from one letter to the next, joining up words like you would dots.

It sounds like a rather clumsy way to type out a missive to a loved one, but it works. This is because it is sc accurate. As long as you get pretty much near where the letter is you want, Swype seems to intuitively know what you are going to write. It's as if Derren Brown is writing your texts a second or two before you do.

When you do swype your finger over the keyboard, a handy blue line is left sc you know what letters you have touched. It all sounds rather complicated, but using Swype is addictive - once you start with the
app you will never want to go tappity-tap ever again.

Swype is definitely what a touchscreen handset was built for. It feels better than getting haptic feedback every time you type and you can also make awesome

patterns with the squiggle that the app leaves behind.

It's not all good news though. To install on our HTC Legend was a bit of a nightmare. If you don't follow a step-by-step guide, you will get lost in the myriad menu3 that you have to tick to get Swype to v/ork. Hopefully this will be ironed out once the app goes legit.

A new update for Swype has made the app tablet friendly, which is a genuine boon. As is the fact that many phone manufacturers are pre-installing it on their handsets. You will find it on a number of Samsung devices. It may not be on the Android Market, but big phone companies are taking the application very seriously, and for good reason
