Initially free, but eventually paid-for messaging app of some likely appeal to Blackberry users.
Free- Multimedia jabber tool
Whats App is another third party messaging app that wants to help you bypass your network carrier's charges by sending messages and multimedia messages to your pals for free. The first thing we were told about Whats App Messenger was that our task manager might cause problems and was unsupported by the customer service team.
Well, our task killer is far more important to us than this app, so many people will tell it to go whistle. For the sake of fairness and thanks to the moderately humorous title, we persevered.
Whats App is another of those messaging apps that requires you to use your phone number to register and then searches your contacts for other users. With 400+contacts in our phone book, it found four contacts, three of which were other technology journalists who presumably downloaded the apps for the same reason we did.
From there we were able to
easily exchange instant messages with our four pals as well as pictures and Videos (up to 12MB) from our gallery. There's also the option to leave audio notes, which is kinda cool
The interface is pretty basic, with iPhone-like bubbles denoting the message flow and it's certainly not as fancy as Kakao, but then when we installed that app no one else we knew was using it.
This app is free to use for the first year and after that it'll cost £1.20/$1.94 a year after that. If you're a BlackBerry convert who misses BBM then this app might plug a gap, but make sure your friends are on board, too.
