The best apps

Our picks from the iPad App Store's gems...

he word 'app' was once just a nerdy abbreviation used by IT bods and sweaty gamers. Since the iPhone took the term as its own, though, it's become as ubiquitous as Tesco. The IPad launches a new phase of the app's bid for world domination. While iPhone apps are all about getting information quickly into the palm of your hand, the iPad allows the user an easier, more visual, and less pressured experience. Already, the result of this shift is genuinely innovative games and apps. Here's our pick ofthe bunch so Far.

Resident Evil 4: iPad Edition
 Price: £5,99

Resident Evil 4 is widely regarded as one of the best console games ever, and this new iPad edition uses on screen controls to recreate the thumbstlcks. It's a great example of how larger controls work much better on the larger IPad display than on awkward virtual controls on an iPhone, and the game itself is superb.

 Geometry Wars: Touch for iPad
 Price: £5,99

Geometry Wars is one of the greatest Xbox Live games. It's set in space, obviously, and is a retro-themed shooter that consists of shooting geometrical shapes, a bit like a hyped-up Asteroids. The visuals are incredibly vibrant making it a perfect match for the Incredible iPad LED display.

 Flight Control HD
 Price: 15.99

The concept is simple, draw lines to guide planes to the safety of an airstrip and don't let them run into each other. Like most good puzzlers it's maddeningly addictive as more planes arrive on the screen. The iPad edition makes great use of multi-touch, enabling you to control multiple planes at once. You only get one life, so it's as nail-biting as ever.

 Pianist Pro

Price: £5,99

If Magic Piano is a little light for you and you're a serious pianist then Pianist Pro is the app for you. This app turns the iPad display into a photo-realistic piano keyboard and the multi-touch display enables you to press as many keys at once as you like. It even has MIDI support and File Sharing so you can digitally transfer your opus magnus.
