Saving links to your favourite websites

ALTHOUGH YOU CAN SYNC SAFARI BOOKMARKS

on your Mac or PC with those in the iPad version of Safari (go to the 'info' tab when exploring your device in iTunes), you'l! soon want to add bookmarks on your iPad itself. Ifyou've used Safari for iPhone, you'll feel right at home with the basic mechanism forworking with bookmarks on the iPad, because it's very similar. In fact, variations in aesthetics and button placement aside, the way Safari for iPad allows you to do editing in the 'Bookmark' pop-up window is identical to the corresponding IPhone screen.

One area in which the iPad fares rather better than the iPhone is in how it integrates the Bookmarks bar from the desktop version ofSafari. This provides you with one-click access to links and extremely fast access to user-defined folders of links. This means, as with Safari on the IPad In general, you get the best of both worlds: an efficient, streamlined bookmark management system, perfect for a mobile device, and quickRre access to the websites you visit on a regular basis.

It's worth noting that the address bar also takes advantage of saved bookmarks. Start typing a web address and a pop-up will provide matches for the part of the address you've typed so Far. As you continue to type, you'll find the list is filtered accordingly; sometimes you only have to type a couple of characters before the website you want appears. Tap the relevant item in the pop-up to visit the website.

 Home-screen shortcuts

While you can create Safari bookmarks for websites you visit regularly, it makes sense to add shortcuts to them to your home screen, too.

1 Adda home-screen shortcut Tap the Add Bookmark button (the'+') next to the address field. Tap 'Add to Home Screen', amend the default name to suit and tap 'Add',

2 Add a book mark To start adding a standard bookmark, do the same as in the previous step, but this time select Add Bookmark'. On doing so, you'll see the 'Add Bookmark' pop-up menu.

3 Edit the name If unhappy with the default bookmark name, tap the 'Clear' button (the 'x' on a grey circle) and type something else. Underneath you'll see the bookmark's URL and its save location.

4 Choose a location By default, bookmarks are saved to the previous location used. To change this, tap the field at the bottom of the pop-up, and select a folder by tapping it. Tap 'Save' when done.

5 Access bookmarks or history To access saved bookmarks, tap the toolbar's Bookmarks icon. Your browsing history is also available here, via the 'History' folder.

 Ready access
For fast access to many websites, keep the Bookmarks Bar permanently on-screen and add groups of bookmarks to folders with really short names, such as 'F' for forums. Each only takes up a tiny amount of space on your bookmarks bar, enabling you to store a dozen more websites of a similar nature. New folders are added by tapping 'New Folder when in the 'Bookmark' pop-up's 'Edit' mode, as in step 7 of the walkthrough.

6 Edit bookmarks In the'Bookmarks' pop-up, tap 'Edit'. Use the drag handles to re-order bookmarks, or tap-select to edit details (name, URL, folder). Tap'Done' when you're finished.

7 Use folders Create new folders with the pop-up's 'New Folder' button. Links you save in the predefined 'Bookmarks Bar' folder appear below the toolbar when you tap inside the address field.

8 Change settings In the Settings app, select Safari. To make the Bookmarks Bar visible always, set 'Always Show Bookmarks Bar' to 'On', You can clear your history, cookies and cache here.
