Facebook for Android - android Communication

An improvement on the basic news feed, but not the definitive smartphone social networking tool.

FREE Don't abandon your computer just yet

To put the popularity of Facebook into context, if it were a country it would be bigger than China. It's strange then that it took the social-networking giant such a longtime to create an Android app of any note.

The latest version is certainly an improvement from the basic news feed of yore but i: still isn't perfect for Facebook viewing. It's a cinch to set up. Just add your Facebook log-in details and you are away.

The home screen gives you a variety of options. From here you can view your profile, look at your friends list, and check out photos, massages and the like. At the bottom of the home screen, the-e's a feed of different: picture updates from the last few days - aid you can also summon a screen which gives you a list of all your notifications.

Drill into your news list and you will see what everyone has been up to. Here you can 'like' people's statuses (this is a bit of a fiddle) and you can update your own status.

When you click on to photos in the stream you are taken to a bespoke viewer that allows you to look at
images in landscape mode. It's nice idea, but takes ages to load and was too buggy to use for a long periods.

There's a number of mobile only features which perk this app up.

If Facebook was a country, it would be bigger than China

The  first is Places. This part of the app enables you to check-in to the places you visit. In turn this will leave a notification to your friends so they know where you are.

Facebook is billing this as an app that will mean you will never miss a friend again if you are in the same area as them. There is an ulterior motive for this, though, that has come to light with the latest feature to land, which is Facebook Deals. The idea is you can check into a cafe or shop and get given discounts.

This is still a new service but if the take up is decent it could be a killer feature. For now, though, you'll still want to use your computer for viewing Facebook properly.
