The endlessly absorbing and remarkably thorough free map service gets a welcome overhaul.
Free Ace update for the superb map app
Google Maps for Android has finally been given the update it deserves, offering up offline viewing and 3D visualisation.
We've been waiting a long time for Google to sort out its Maps for Android. Net that there was anything inherently wrong with the app - but the promise of 3D views and offline modes made the current iteration look rather bland.
It's the 3D maps that's the killer here. Viewing some of the major world cities in the on your smartphone and in 3D is impressive.
There's something great about using a 3D map when you are walking through the town. 3D has been used on sat-navs for cars for a while now end while it is a needless distraction in a fast-moving vehicle, you have time to look at the map when you are walking.
Using finger gestures you can tilt, rotate and zoom through the 3D map. And if you aren't happy with viewing the map this way, then it is only a quick toggle to get yourself on to the more conservative compass view. Another massive new feature on Google Maps 5 is the use of cached maps. This offline mode is a bit of a lifesaver; the caching of content isn't for everywhere but it's useful when you are in a town that has been given the offline treatment.
Given the fancy new graphics, you would expect some lag using the app but there really isn't. Some fancy behind-the-scenes tech means that the maps are faster than before.
To use the spangle new features, you need to be packing Android 2.0
It's distracting in moving vehicles, but you have time to look at the map when you are walking
and above - but this app will work for those who have Android 1.6 sens the later features.
Google Maps 5 is a stunning updates to Google Maps. Even without the new content, you have the free, voice-guided GPS navigation system to use, as well as Google Latitude so your mates know where you are.
And then the-e is also a variety of place recommendations that pop up when you are in the area.
It's amazing that all this content can fit in your smartphone and that it is free to boot.
